Peterborough Children’s Chorus May 26 spring concert will focus on the theme of finding home after immigrating to Canada.

The Peterborough Children’s Chorus has teamed up with with the New Canadians Centre, local children’s book author and illustrator Cassandra Lee, and singers from Upbeat! Downtown to present their Our Home spring concert on Sunday, May 26 at Emmanuel United Church. Starting at 3 p.m., more than 40 young singers will perform songs inspired by the experiences of children who have immigrated to the area with their families.
Between the songs, Cassandra Lee will share readings from Building a Home, a children’s book based on the stories and artwork shared by six children from Syria, Kazakhstan, Mexico, and Pakistan who now live in Nogojiwanong-Peterborough. The book is available for sale at Watson and Lou both online and at their 383 Water Street shop. A digital version of Building a Home is also available for free at the New Canadians Centre website https://nccpeterborough.ca/buildingahome/
“We are so proud of all the kids. They have worked really hard preparing for this concert,” said youth choir director Anna Eidt. “We found some really beautiful music in a compilation that included an Islamic welcome song sung in Arabic and have wanted to do that song with our choir for a very long time. The point of this concert is to have fun and share what the children have been learning, but also to get people thinking about what it’s like to lose your home and have to create a new one.”
Tickets to the Our Home concert are available online for $15. Families, seniors, and students can attend at discounted rates, and children 4 and under can get in for free.
