Artspace presents Texty Tuesday – Pride in Poetry

Artspace’s Texty Tuesdays are back, with June 18th’s session focusing on the theme “Pride in Poetry”.
Derek Newman-Stille, a local queer, disabled academic, artist, activist, and author, will join Texty Tuesday organizer Janette Platana to facilitate a special workshop session for Pride Month on June 18 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Texty Tuesday is an interactive writing group which fosters creativity and celebrates the power of words through writing exercises, discussion, drawing, and other forms of artistic expression.
Because the group takes place at Artspace, Platana often starts by encouraging participants to draw inspiration from the art pieces around them.
“I think a key difference between this group and other writing groups is the benefit of being in Artspace,” said guest co-facilitator Newman-Stille. “Being surrounded by art invites creativity and imagining. It allows us to think in creative modalities.”
“I hope that participants in the event will get a chance to be in a welcoming space and have a chance to write in that safe space,” they added. “I hope to get some new as well as experienced writers to create community together and use art for transformative change. I want folks to understand the impact and magic of words.”
They shared that it is particularly meaningful to be part of giving queer writers the opportunity to explore Pride in poetic forms. “The LGBTQ2IA community has been the target of various political and personal attacks and it starts to feel like there is nothing we can do to make change,” they said. “Creative writing allows for the opportunity of joyful resistance to the homophobic, transphobic world around us. It allows us not only to speak up, but to engage creative ways of speaking up and make space for change while enjoying ourselves.”
