April 20, 2024 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

On April 20th, Artspace is taking the next step in making the gallery more inclusive by hosting their first BIPOC event at 378 Aylmer Street North in downtown Peterborough.
Self-identified Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour are invited to the free Artspace event from 1 to 4 p.m. to view the work of Mexican artist Anahí González.
A resident of London, Ontario, González is currently completing her PhD in visual arts at Western University. Her photography focuses on capturing alternative narratives around Mexican industry.
The gallery attendant will welcome all guests at the door, with light refreshments available for visitors. Folks can talk to Artspace staff about the art, learn about the Maker Space, and connect with each other.
Artspace will present BIPOC gallery days regularly moving forward, in response to feedback around the need for intentional BIPOC community spaces and programming.
“As someone not raised in Peterborough or Canada I hadn’t been exposed to artist-run centres before, but sometimes you don’t have to know the history to feel the reverberations of a place’s legacy as a white-centred space,” said Artspace communications and engagement coordinator Zwena Gray. “Doing things like this will shift the narrative and 20 years from now, when we look back it will be a different story than the one 20 years ago.”
