Introducing: Community Voices in Journalism

Peterborough Currents is launching a new initiative. We want to work with new and emerging local writers to tell stories about this community… and we want you to be a part of it.

What’s getting you excited in your community?
What stories are going untold?
What challenges are people facing, and how are they fighting back?
Who is doing good work that deserves to be celebrated?

We want human stories, stories about possibilities and opportunities, stories that tell us about the wider world and the issues of the day. We want stories about Peterborough (and the region) that are being overlooked by traditional media and that you think deserve wider attention – and we want new local voices who can tell those stories.

No prior journalism experience is required for this program. You’ll work with a Peterborough Currents editor, who will help guide you through the process and teach you the basics of journalism. We’ll meet with you to refine your idea and figure out a plan for reporting it and writing it, and then we’ll work together to edit the piece and get it ready for publication in Peterborough Currents.

This is a paid opportunity, with compensation between $300 and $500, depending on the complexity of the story.

How to get involved

If you’ve got a story to tell, send an email to news@peterboroughcurrents.ca with the subject line ‘Community Voices’ and tell us about it.

This is the make-or-break year for Peterborough Currents — the year that will determine if our small but impactful news outlet survives. We need 50 new monthly supporters to keep on track. Will you take the leap?
