SUMMARY:B!KE meet and Glow Ride
DESCRIPTION:B!KE\, Peterborough’s Community Bike Shop\, is inviting local cyclists to join them for a picnic meet and Glow Ride on August 9. \n\n\n\nA previous B!KE Glow Ride. (Photo: Jean Greig.)\n\n\n\nStarting at 7 p.m. on August 9\, folks are welcome to join B!KE at Nicholl’s Oval for a picnic with live music\, and cool off at the splash pad before beginning an evening ride at 8:45 p.m. \n\n\n\nThe inspiration for B!KE’s Glow Ride events came from “Bike Raves” held by the University of British Columbia in Vancouver\, according to B!KE staff and Glow Ride Planning Committee member Ness Pringle. They explained that the Bike Raves are “essentially a night-time party with lights and music\, but on bikes”. \n\n\n\nPeterborough’s events were named Glow Rides as a nod to the lights and glow sticks used to decorate participants’ bikes. “We are recreating the feeling of a rave\, and are also super visible as riders at night\,” Pringle said. \n\n\n\nAlthough the B!KE Glow Rides started as adult-focused events in 2016\, they have shifted to include riders of all ages. Pringle said that the family friendly portion of the rides “have shorter routes and a slow pace”\, and that more confident riders can continue through a longer\, slightly faster-paced phase of the route. \n\n\n\nFor those who haven’t attended a Glow Ride before\, Pringle noted\, “You can expect party vibes with a bumpin’ playlist and a stop for social time to meet fellow glow riders. We have a Glow Ride guide crew on all of our rides who are there to keep the group together\, maintain the party pace\, and offer first aid or mechanical support if anything goes wrong.” \n\n\n\nPringle said that B!KE designs their routes to be as safe and accessible as possible\, utilizing bike lanes\, trails\, and quiet streets. The group is able to take up entire lanes of the street when necessary\, such as when making left-hand turns. \n\n\n\nThey recommend for riders to come with glow decorations already on their bikes\, and invite people to wear fun colourful outfits. If anyone is unable to make it to the official meet-up spot\, they are also welcome to join the group part-way along the ride. B!KE posts their official route on social media a few days ahead of the event. \n\n\n\n“We love riding in large groups because it offers both social benefits and a feeling of safety to to those who may not usually feel safe riding on the streets of Peterborough\,” said Pringle. “When riding in a large group with support like this\, many people say they had no worries of fear about their safety like they would as individual cyclists. They can focus on enjoying themselves instead.”

SUMMARY:Art in the Park - Artsy explorations for kids and teens
DESCRIPTION:Cheri Patrick-Wilson of Kidz First Ptbo is offering half-day arts programming for kids aged 6 to 11 in the mornings\, and teens from 12 to 16 in the afternoons this July. \n\n\n\n“Child development and art are my two passions. Art education benefits children across all domains of development\,” said Patrick-Wilson\, a Registered Early Childhood Educator with many years of arts and culture programming experience. “However\, they can’t sit at a table all day. Children have varying attention spans\, physical needs\, and interests. I wanted to develop a program that was truly inclusive and allowed children the freedom to do what they enjoyed and make choices at their own pace.” \n\n\n\nArt in the Park will give kids the opportunity to rest in the shade or play at the playground\, and will provide opportunities to explore artistic expression through sketching\, watercolour\, paints\, collage\, printmaking and more. The program will take place at Nichol’s Oval\, where the wild spaces and riverside will inspire kids to practice their naturalist skills of observing and listening to find beauty in the world around them. \n\n\n\n“My art teaching approach is process-based and emergent\,” said Patrick-Wilson. “That is to say\, I follow the interests of the students and allow them to choose their own learning path. I do a short demo of technique or new material and then the students explore the materials in the ways they wish. I involve them in the planning\, asking what they would like to learn or what materials they would like to have. We do not end up with cookie-cutter art but with inspired and confident young artists.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterested parents can contact Cheri Patrick-Wilson for more information or to register their child for Art in the Park at cheripatrick@hotmail.ca

SUMMARY:Rise Against the Machine - a night of music by social activists at Jethro's
DESCRIPTION:Trent Radio’s Radio from the Stage series\, which records and airs live musical performances around Peterborough\, continues with Rise Against the Machine on Sunday\, June 30 from 8 to 10 p.m. at Jethro’s Bar and Stage. \n\n\n\nFeaturing Social Activists Beats\, Mshkiki Gitigaan Kwe\, Garbageface\, and special guest Myles Conner\, the evening will focus on music with a political edge. \n\n\n\nKarol Orzechowski\, also known as Garbageface\, was originally slated to perform in a live radio drama for one of the previous Radio from the Stage events\, but due to conflicts was rescheduled to the June 30 performance. “I saw that it was politically themed\, which is great. I don’t mind one bit\,” Orzechowski said. \n\n\n\nHe added that he will play songs from his newest record\, Enantiodromia. The title refers to the principle popularized by psychiatrist Carl Jung that there is a tendency for things to slowly shift towards their opposites. “The way I talk about it on the record a lot is the way people sort of drift from being politically conscious to becoming more conservative\, from being spiritual to kind of losing faith\, or even in the opposite direction from being very closed minded to being open minded\,” Orzechowski explained. “I’ve really focused on the idea of what social progress means.” \n\n\n\nAdmission for the night of social activism-themed musical performance is free\, sponsored by the Community Radio Fund of Canada. \n\n\n\nGarbageface performing. SUMMARY:Join Pride Outside and the Peterborough Field Naturalists for a nature walk
DESCRIPTION:A previous Pride Outside walk\, photo courtesy of Pride Outside. \n\n\n\nOn June 27 at 6 p.m.\, LGBTQ2S+ nature lovers and allies are invited to join Pride Outside and the Peterborough Field Naturalists for a nature walk.  \n\n\n\nThe group will meet at Roger’s Cove in the grassy area between the splash pad and Little Lake. From there\, folks will wander over to Beavermead and Ecology Park.  \n\n\n\nPeterborough Field Naturalists organizer Tamara Brown will lead attendees in noticing and learning about interesting plants and birds along the route. \n\n\n\nAfter a nature-themed scavenger hunt\, anyone interested can join for ice cream and/or beverages at Silver Bean (Canoe Museum) to cool off.  \n\n\n\nPride Outside organizers Em and Emmett started gathering local queer folks for a weekly walking group back in 2022\, with the goal of creating a safe space for LGBTQ2S+ people and their allies to connect with nature and each other. \n\n\n\n“We now do a range of events but the aim is always to get queer and trans folks outside and in nature as much as possible\,” Em said. “Queer folks sometimes feel unsafe or unwelcome in other social environments that aren’t queer focused. We really aim to create a space that celebrates queer folks and allows them to connect with nature and move their bodies in a way that feels good and is accessible to them.” \n\n\n\nEm added that one of the most fulfilling aspects of their organizing has been watching friendships develop through the weekly meet-ups. “It’s also so wonderful to see the way this group allows people to further explore and experiment with their identity in collaboration with our community\,” they said. Em noted that the group has become a space where people feel supported to try out different names or pronouns\, and talk about their experiences of gender and sexuality.  \n\n\n\nThe Pride Outside organizers shared their excitement around having the Peterborough Field Naturalists join them for this upcoming nature walk. \n\n\n\n“They bring a ton of knowledge about nature that we are eager to share with our community\,” Em said. “Our walks tend to be a social environment\, and we’re excited to incorporate an educational component as well.”

SUMMARY:Join Pride Outside and Peterborough GAA for an evening of Gaelic Football
DESCRIPTION:Pride Outside and Peterborough GAA have joined forces to introduce locals to Gaelic Football on Wednesday June 26 at 7 p.m.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn Irish sport played on a field\, similar to soccer and other familiar team sports\, organizers say Gaelic Football is “like soccer with hands plus basketball with feet”. \n\n\n\nParticipants will gather at the Adam Scott sports field\, and coaches will begin with a warm on before introducing some basic skills of the sport. Then the group will put those skills to use with some fun drills. \n\n\n\nThis is an 18+ event and participants will be required to sign a waiver. Organizers recommend wearing comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Participants should also bring water to drink. \n\n\n\n“It’s so fun to learn new things and meet new people\, and that’s really what both of our groups are about\,” Tracy Campbell of Peterborough GAA said. “I think it was inevitable that we’d collaborate.” \n\n\n\nCampbell\, originally from Nova Scotia\, picked up the sport later in life playing with clubs in South Korea\, Ottawa\, and Halifax. In 2018 she moved from Halifax to Peterborough\, and missing the sport\, decided to start Peterborough GAA. The club has grown to over 20 active participants in just two years. \n\n\n\nAnyone who enjoys the joint event with Pride Outside is welcome to attend more of Peterborough GAA’s training sessions\, which take place Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. at the Adam Scott sports field.

Photo: Cherylanne James.)\n\n\n\nThe world’s first and only Indigenous Fringe Festival is focused on providing opportunities for Indigenous performers to showcase uncensored\, land-based art. Shows will take place from June 21 to the 23. \n\n\n\nFor the fifth annual festival this year\, artists are gathering from all over the province and beyond to share their performances with the Nogojiwanong-Peterborough community. \n\n\n\nThe festival will also feature local talent\, including drag performer Jesse Vossen and filmmakers Alice Olsen Williams\, Carol Taylor\, Marg Knott\, Marilyn Knott\, Anne Taylor\, Jonathan Taylor\, Angela Connors\, Missy Knott\, and Sarah Lewis. \n\n\n\n“It’s amazing how different all of our shows are from each other and from what we’ve seen before\,” said NIFF general manager Lee Bolton. “Because we are part of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals\, there is no curation and no censorship. Basically\, the rule is if it’s not illegal and it’s not going to burn the place down\, you can do it.”  \n\n\n\n“The variety of contemporary Indigenous performance that’s out there is just amazing\,” she added. “This is a living culture and people have the chance to come and experience it.” \n\n\n\nNIFF is organized by two part-time staff\, with the help of summer students and volunteers. SUMMARY:Artspace presents Texty Tuesday - Pride in Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Artspace’s Texty Tuesdays are back\, with June 18th’s session focusing on the theme “Pride in Poetry”. \n\n\n\nDerek Newman-Stille\, a local queer\, disabled academic\, artist\, activist\, and author\, will join Texty Tuesday organizer Janette Platana to facilitate a special workshop session for Pride Month on June 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. \n\n\n\nTexty Tuesday is an interactive writing group which fosters creativity and celebrates the power of words through writing exercises\, discussion\, drawing\, and other forms of artistic expression.  \n\n\n\nBecause the group takes place at Artspace\, Platana often starts by encouraging participants to draw inspiration from the art pieces around them. \n\n\n\n“I think a key difference between this group and other writing groups is the benefit of being in Artspace\,” said guest co-facilitator Newman-Stille. “Being surrounded by art invites creativity and imagining. It allows us to think in creative modalities.” \n\n\n\n“I hope that participants in the event will get a chance to be in a welcoming space and have a chance to write in that safe space\,” they added. “I hope to get some new as well as experienced writers to create community together and use art for transformative change. I want folks to understand the impact and magic of words.” \n\n\n\nThey shared that it is particularly meaningful to be part of giving queer writers the opportunity to explore Pride in poetic forms. “The LGBTQ2IA community has been the target of various political and personal attacks and it starts to feel like there is nothing we can do to make change\,” they said. “Creative writing allows for the opportunity of joyful resistance to the homophobic\, transphobic world around us. It allows us not only to speak up\, but to engage creative ways of speaking up and make space for change while enjoying ourselves.”   \n\n\n\nParticipants will need to bring a pen and paper along with any electronic devices they use for writing. The event is free to attend but requires registration ahead of time at www.eventbrite.com/e/texty-tuesdays-tickets-856994673137

DESCRIPTION:The Queer Maker Market is back on Sunday June 9\, with 13 vendors bringing their pride and their creations to Dreams of Beans \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, June 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, visitors can browse and shop artistic creations by 13 queer and BIPOC makers at Dreams of Beans. \n\n\n\nThis is the second time Aimee Leptick has run the Queer Maker Market\, with the inaugural event taking place during Peterborough Pride week last September. \n\n\n\n“Quite often during Pride week and month\, the emphasis is on events\, performances\, and gatherings\, and I felt the makers in the community were left out\,” she said. “This gives queer and BIPOC members of our community a chance to shine and be showcased as well. I aim to keep our event as accessible as I can so that more and more folks can take part.” \n\n\n\nLeptick hopes to run the next Queer Maker Market during Pride week in September\, but for the June 9 event she has gathered a diverse group of talented vendors\, with creations like zines\, stickers\, art prints\, collages\, rugs\, stationary\, handmade bags\, and accessories available for sale. \n\n\n\nFor the first attendees who arrive\, there are 20 free swag bags filled with small items from the featured vendors up for grabs.

We really wanted to try something different and get people up and grooving and having a good time.” \n\n\n\nThe band will play covers of rock\, pop\, funk\, and R&B music\, with titles like “Feel Good Inc.” by Gorillaz\, “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis\, “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” by The Darkness\, “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson\, and many more. \n\n\n\n They have practiced their set-list for months in preparation for this first Peterborough gig\, drawing on years of performance and classical training for some members. \n\n\n\nMahoney\, Gould\, and Patterson have performed in bands for years\, while Scott Wight studied the clarinet at Wilfrid Laurier University and later picked up the saxophone. His twin brother Jason Wight played guitar casually for many years but took his skills to the next level at The School of Rock in Markham\, Ontario during the Covid 19 pandemic. They brought in Jason’s wife\, McGill\, to sing lead vocals and round out the band’s sound. \n\n\n\n“This is my first experience performing for people\,” McGill said. “I didn’t really know what we were getting into but it’s too late to turn back now. And besides\, we’ve learned that we actually sound really good together.” \n\n\n\nTickets to the Electric City Pulse show at The Venue cost $10 and are available online at https://electriccitypulse.ticketspice.com/introducing-electric-city-pulse

We always have an ongoing list of things we notice during the event that we can improve on year over year. We’ve come a long way since our first year and we are so proud to be back in 2024.” \n\n\n\nTickets are available online at the Kawartha Craft Beer Festival website. SUMMARY:Small Dance for a Small Space Festival at The Theatre on King
DESCRIPTION:The Theatre on King is hosting their annual Small Dance for a Small Space Festival from May 29 to June 1\, with local artists showcasing dance pieces starting at 8 p.m. across four nights. \n\n\n\nThe festival began in 2013 when The Theatre on King’s artistic and technical director Ryan Kerr opened his small studio space for area dancers to perform whatever they had been working on. \n\n\n\n“This was before I had The Theatre on King\, so it was a much smaller space back then\,” Kerr said. “Our challenge was to create short pieces under 10 minutes\, that they could perform in a 10 foot by 10 foot space. We have more space than that now so there is a little wiggle room\, but the idea is to keep the footprint small.” \n\n\n\nThe 2024 lineup will include contemporary dance by Kerr himself\, as well as Kate Alton\, and Liza Ingram. Naomi DuVall and Kollene Drummond will present circus movement pieces\, and Colleen KimiArts will perform a fusion belly dance. \n\n\n\n“Every year is different and you can really expect almost anything because people are showing brand new works for the first time and test-driving experimental pieces\,” Kerr said. “I think people are always surprised by the amount of dancers here in town creating new work. Peterborough has a vibrant dance scene that is alternative and independent\, and dancers just need a place to showcase what they are working on\, so I’m glad I could fill that void.” \n\n\n\nHe explained that artists have used the Small Dance for a Small Space Festival as a springboard to test material that would later become popular full-fledged shows\, including Kate Story’s Damned Be This Trans Migration which was presented by Public Energy in 2015\, and Kerr’s Dazzle Ships which he presented at The Theatre on King in 2016. \n\n\n\nKerr works with each artist to develop the sound and light routines for their performances. Public Energy also sponsors the festival as part of ongoing initiatives to promote local performers. \n\n\n\n“Something special about the fest is that this all takes place in an intimate space with a small audience\, so every time you come here you are only about 10 feet away from the actors with no orchestra pit or anything else between you and the performers\,” Kerr added. “There’s something really exciting about seeing performances so up close and personal.” \n\n\n\nTickets to the Small Dance for a Small Space Festival cost $20\, with a pay what you can option at the door.

SUMMARY:Peterborough Children's Chorus presents Our Home Concert
DESCRIPTION:Peterborough Children’s Chorus May 26 spring concert will focus on the theme of finding home after immigrating to Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Peterborough Children’s Chorus has teamed up with with the New Canadians Centre\, local children’s book author and illustrator Cassandra Lee\, and singers from Upbeat! Downtown to present their Our Home spring concert on Sunday\, May 26 at Emmanuel United Church. Starting at 3 p.m.\, more than 40 young singers will perform songs inspired by the experiences of children who have immigrated to the area with their families. \n\n\n\nBetween the songs\, Cassandra Lee will share readings from Building a Home\, a children’s book based on the stories and artwork shared by six children from Syria\, Kazakhstan\, Mexico\, and Pakistan who now live in Nogojiwanong-Peterborough. The book is available for sale at Watson and Lou both online and at their 383 Water Street shop. A digital version of Building a Home is also available for free at the New Canadians Centre website https://nccpeterborough.ca/buildingahome/ \n\n\n\n“We are so proud of all the kids. They have worked really hard preparing for this concert\,” said youth choir director Anna Eidt. “We found some really beautiful music in a compilation that included an Islamic welcome song sung in Arabic and have wanted to do that song with our choir for a very long time. The point of this concert is to have fun and share what the children have been learning\, but also to get people thinking about what it’s like to lose your home and have to create a new one.” \n\n\n\nTickets to the Our Home concert are available online for $15. Families\, seniors\, and students can attend at discounted rates\, and children 4 and under can get in for free.

SUMMARY:Miracle Territory concert at Take Cover Books
DESCRIPTION:Peterborough songwriter David Tough will join Carson McHone in concert at Take Cover Books at 7 p.m.\, Saturday May 25. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe intimate evening of performance is part of the Miracle Territory project\, which aims to present small all-ages shows in alternative venues around Peterborough. \n\n\n\n“These shows are put on by Michael Duguay\, who I have known for years and worked with often\,” Tough said. “When we met I was in the Silver Hearts and he was in the Unionist Ministers\, so objectively I was cooler than him\, but at some point that changed.”  \n\n\n\nBoth Tough and McHone will share their own original music at the Miracle Territory event. McHone’s pieces focus on the themes of in-between places and trying to find balance. Tough is a well-known local singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist whose most recent single featured Serena Ryder and Lewis Melville. \n\n\n\n“I’ve done a lot of collaborative work\, but this show is my solo songs\,” Tough added. “I write pop songs with clever lyrics and elaborate settings. My songs usually have a lot of humour and wit in them\, but are also generally sad. Some people enjoy that kind of thing.” \n\n\n\nTough took some time away from performing after the passing of his son\, William\, in 2022. \n\n\n\n“A lot of things have been hard since then\, but I couldn’t pick up a musical instrument for the first year after he died without breaking down in tears\, let alone sing songs about my feelings in public\,” said Tough. “Michael asked me if I wanted to play a Miracle Territory show\, and I decided I would not overthink it and just say yes.” \n\n\n\nTickets cost $25\, or pay what you can at the door. \n\n\n\nTo learn more about Miracle Territory\, follow the project on Instagram @miracle_territory or visit the Take Cover Books event page at https://www.takecoverbooks.ca/events

SUMMARY:Drone Day at Sadleir House
DESCRIPTION:From noon until midnight on May 25\, Sadleir House’s lecture hall will host Drone Day. Artists will provide sustained experimental droning sounds for 30 minutes\, with 5 minutes of overlap between each musician’s set. \n\n\n\nDrone Day was first introduced by Weird Canada as an invitation for artists to make noise and create healing vibrations in community with others. The late musician and community organizer BP Hughes first brought the event to Peterborough in 2015 with the help of Trent Radio. It has since grown into a live event with dozens of artists stepping out of their comfort zone to share their experimental sounds on the last Saturday in May each year. \n\n\n\n“One of BP’s hopes with the event was to create a low-barrier way for anyone – newcomers\, shy folks\, experimentalists\, and veterans – to get tapped into the local strange music scene\,” said this year’s Drone Day organizer Karol Orzechowski. “I’m approaching it very much in that spirit as well.” \n\n\n\n“Artists can treat it as a deep performance\, as a public meditation\, as a chance to meet other local weirdos\, as a chance to try something outside of your comfort zone\, there are so many ways to approach it\,” Orzechowski added. “This is generally very slow\, ambient music\, sometimes veering into noise and harsher textures.” \n\n\n\nOne group that will contribute to the local Drone Day event are Melinda Richter\, Robyn Avis\, and Léanne Hodgson. They joined forces to create Light Organ\, which they say was initially supposed to be a one-day group project in 2016 but became much more meaningful. \n\n\n\nLéanne Hodgson\, Robyn Avis\, and Melinda Richter of Light Organ will bring their experimental sounds to Drone Day on May 25.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Bryan (BP Hughes) was my partner\,” said Avis\, “And he was always making noise. Before Drone Day officially happened in Peterborough for the first time\, he would put speakers on the front lawn and have it on all day on Drone Day.” \n\n\n\n“We are doing this in his memory\,” added Hodgson. “BP was someone who gave me the courage to get up in front of people. Drone Day is a really low stakes opportunity for people to get out there. You can sound terrible but still be supported.” \n\n\n\n“I love the physical sensation of the sound\, and I love the element of playfulness that comes with this kind of performance art\,” said Richter. “There is no pretentiousness\, and it’s the kind of event you can just pop into at any point which is really nice.” \n\n\n\nTo learn more about Drone Day\, visit www.droneday.org
